The Ranch

At Out of Bounds Ranch, we run 400-600 head of cattle April though October. Providing for the well-being and safety of our herd is our top priority. Our cattle husbandry and veterinary care is overseen and managed by ranching veteran, Max Macdonnell.

Cattle

Max MacDonell is Out of Bounds Ranch’s Head of Cattle Ranching and Water Operations. He is an "Old School” rancher and true “Local" who was born and raised in the Roaring Fork Valley. He developed his passion for ranching from an early age and never looked back. After graduating from Colorado State University in 1979 with a degree in animal science, Max began managing a ranch. Soon thereafter, in 1981, Max leased what is now the Out of Bounds Ranch, where he has run cows, calves, yearlings and raised all-natural, grass-fed beef for the past 44 years. Max’s care and passion for the animals’ wellbeing and stewardship of the land is second to none.

When not on the ranch, Max enjoys competing in rodeos and jackpots throughout Colorado, Arizona, Nevada and Utah.

Cleve

Cleve Johnson is Out of Bounds Ranch’s Head of Operations.

A Basalt native, Cleve grew up in the Roaring Fork Valley. He graduated from YAMPAH Mountain High School in 2006.

After high school, while attending the community college, Cleve perused a competitive snowboarding career joining the SSWSC in Steamboat Springs. He spent the next five years living in Europe working in kitchens to support his career.

After going under the knife for a second time to repair damages sustained from snowboarding, Cleve had a different outlook on competition and life.

Cleve returned to the RFV and met his now wife, Katelyn.

They now have two children, Dutch Dylan Johnson and Wild Winter Johnson. They are 6th generation Colorado on Katelyn’s side. Her ancestors came across on stage coaches and settled in Manitou Springs, CO.

Cleve joined the ranching, hospitality and property management profession in 2011.

“I spend my time making peoples dreams a reality and trying to raise my kids to be more handy/ helpful and kind, and to leave this world and land better then it was. Trying to raise my children close to the land is my dream. As the Luke Bryan song goes ‘hunting, fishing and loving everyday.’” - Cleve Johnson
