Stewardship at Out of Bounds
“Leave the land better than we found it.”
Stewardship:
“The more of ourselves that we give to the land, the more it becomes a part of us.”
- Scott Smith
At Out of Bounds Ranch, stewardship is more than a responsibility. It is a privilege, a personal commitment, and a labor of love.
We recognize that we are only the current caretakers of a landscape with a history far greater than our own. Long before us, generations of people lived upon and cared for these lands, including the Ute people, whose enduring connection to this place deserves our respect.
We are humbled by that history and honored to have the opportunity to contribute our own small chapter.
For us, stewardship is not simply admiring the land or preserving its natural beauty. It means showing up, putting in the hours, and doing the work ourselves.
It is found in the long days, the tired muscles, the dirt on our hands, and the quiet satisfaction of knowing that our efforts have made a difference.
Much of this work we choose to do ourselves. Not because there aren't easier ways, but because there is something deeply meaningful about personally caring for a place you love.
Over time, the work becomes more than work.
The investment of our time, our energy, and a little of ourselves creates a connection to the land that is difficult to explain and impossible to measure.
The more of ourselves we give to the land, the more it becomes a part of us.
And perhaps that is one of stewardship's greatest gifts. While we work to care for the land, it quietly gives something back to us in ways that are difficult to put into words.
A sense of belonging. A deeper appreciation for nature. A spiritual connection to God's creation and to something much greater than ourselves.
We know that our time here is temporary. The land has endured for generations before us and, with thoughtful care, will continue to thrive for generations to come.
Our hope is that when our chapter in its history is complete, we will have honored those who came before us, fulfilled our responsibility to those who follow, and left this extraordinary place a little better than we found it.
Stewardship in Action
Our commitment to the land is measured not simply by what we believe, but by what we do.
Across Out of Bounds Ranch, that commitment takes many forms—from restoring forests and improving wildlife habitat to protecting water resources, caring for our pastures, reducing wildfire risks, and preserving the traditions of a working ranch.
Each project represents an investment in the long-term health of the land and a responsibility we take personally.
These efforts are ongoing. Some produce visible results within a season; others may take generations to fully realize their benefits.
What connects them is a simple belief: the land deserves our very best efforts, not just for today, but for those who will care for it long after we're gone.
